The different branches of the Vithayathil family

  •                Varkey, an elderly member of the family, who left Kanjoor and settled down in Varapuzha married Kunjannam, daughter of Thaliath Vareed. They had two sons Varkey and Pailey. Varkey got married and lived in the family home (tharavad) and his house was known as Thekkeveed. Pailey too got married and lived in a house built on the northern side and this was known as Vadakkeveed. Pailey had only one daughter and she was married off to Valiya Hormis of Ezhupunna Parayil and started living in the northern house by way of adoption. Later this house was bought by Mathevus Perera of Varapuzha. Now his children live there. And in the house still there is a statue of St. Antony worshipped from the time of Pailey. The picture of this statue is on one of the first few pages. Pailey’s family branch thus became extinct. Varkey had two sons - Varkey and Pailey. Varkey’s family branch comes under Pallirukattil, Alangad, Adichillil, Kollamparambu, Vekattuparambu and Mukkaliparmbu branches. Ambattuparmbu, (Thekkeveedu, Puthakkada, Vadakkeveedu) and Cheranallore branches belong to Pailey.
                Varkey had five sons - Kochuvarkey, Kunjipailo, Lona, Ouseph Hormis, and three daughters as well and they were married into Puthenpally Moolan, Njarkkal Pullan and South Parur Parapuram families. Of the five sons, Lona had no children. Ouseph became a priest. Hormis had only daughters. The remaining two - Kochuvarkey and Kunjipaulo - have left behind their lineage.
  • PALLIRUKATTU BRANCH
  •         Kochuvarkey had three sons and two daughters. The sons were named Kunjuvarkey, Kochuouseph and Lonakunju. The present Pallirukad branch belongs to Kunjuvarkey, Ittoop and Lonppan who are the sons of Ouseph, the only son of Kunjuvarkey.
  • ALANGAD BRANCH
  •         Kochuvarkey’s second son Kochouseph had four sons named Varkey, Kurian, Lona and Poulo. Of them, Varkey married from Alangad and settled there. And Varkey had five sons - Thariath, Kochouseph, Mani, Agasty and Lonappan. Lonappan remained a bachelor. The present Alangad branch consists of the descendants of the other four sons. Varkey’s third son Lona had an only son called Kochuouseph. He settled at Kodakara. He had two sons - Johny and Devassikutty. They settled in Kumali. The fourth son Poulo had no children
  • ADICHILIL BRANCH
  •         Kochuvarkey’s second son Kochuouseph’s son Kurian shifted to Adichilikadavu. His sons Pappu, Agasthy and Ittiachan’s families are known as Adichillil branch.
  • KOLLAMPARAMBU BRANCH
  •         It is the lineage of Kochuvarkey’s third son Lonakunji. He settled in Kongorpilly at Kollamparambu. Of the three sons of Lona - Varkey, Ouseph and Pailey - Ouseph embraced priesthood. The lineage of Varkey and Paily make the present Kollamparambu Branch.
  • VEKATTUPARAMBU BRANCH
  •         This branch had its origin in Varkey, the son of Kunjipaulo who was one of the five Patriarchs. Kunjipaulo had two sons called Varkey and Kochuouseph and two daughters as well. They were married off to the Sankurikkal family of Njarakal and Puchapudussery of Kizhakkambalam. Of the four sons of Varkey, Devassy, Paulo, Ouseph and Lonappan, Ouseph went into the priestly orders. The present branch consists of the lineage of the remaining three. Poulo’s son Varkey settled at Kattoor.
  • MUKKALIPARAMBU BRANCH(Kothamangalam, Kodakara, Thodupuzha)
  •         The karanavar of this branch is Kochouseph, son of Kunjipaulo. Kochouseph had two sons called Cheria and Varkey. Cheria had four sons - Ouseph, Kuripe, Paulo and Kunjuvarkey. Of them, Kuripe settled in Kothamangalam. The descendants of Devassy, the only son of Kuripe had four sons and their families are at present in Kothamangalam. The third son Poulo settled in Kodakara and his son Kurian, Mathan and Varghese’s descendants are now there. Cheria’s fourth son Kunjuvarkey settled in Thodupuzha. The family of Pappachan, the only son of Kunjuvarkey live in Thodupuzha - Kochouseph’s second son Varkey had two sons - Kochappu and Kunjipoulo. Kochappu settled in Varapuzha. His only son Varkey settled in Puna. Paulo settled at Olanad. Of the three sons of Paulo, two passed away. And so the present lineage consists of Joseph’s descendants.
  • AMBATTUPARAMBU BRANCH
  •         Of the sons of the ancestors Varkey and Pailey, Pailey’s son Pailey shifted to Ambattuparmbu at Mannamthruth. This branch had its origin in him. Pailey had three sons - Varkey, Porinchu and Lonappan. Of them, Varkey moved to the southern side of Ambattuparmbu and it is known as Thekkeveed. (Southern House) The descendants of Varkey’s sons Paulo, Ouseph, Hormis and Devassy make up this branch. The second son of Varkey was Porinchu and he shifted to the banks of the river Periyar and came to be known as Putthakada. The descendants of the sons of Porinchu - Paulo, Chakko, Kochappu and Varkey belong to this branch. The third son Lonappan stayed in the family home (tharavad). And his sons Ouseph, Paulo and Chakkappan’s families are known as Ambattuparambu (Vadakkeveedu). The lineage of Ouseph, the eldest son, is at present at Kattoor.
  • CHERANELLORE BRANCH
  •         This branch has its origin in Varkey, one of the two Karanavers Pailey and Varkey. Varkey settled at Cheranellore. His only son Hormis had eleven children and his two daughters became nuns and one of the sons embraced priesthood. Of the remaining four sons, Pailey settled in Varapuzha, Porinchu at Mannamthuth and Kochappu and Varkey settled at Cheranellore and their families belong to this branch. The only son of Kochappu who lived in Cheranellore was Lonappan whose family are at present at Aloor.
